Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the newly appointed Ashanti Regional Minister, has outlined his vision for the region, emphasizing security, infrastructure, and the fight against illegal mining.

Speaking during his first engagement with the media after his approval by Parliament, Dr. Amoakohene reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing key issues affecting the region.

Dr. Amoakohene highlighted concerns over security, particularly recent clashes between miners and local communities. He assured the public that his administration is working with security agencies to restore calm and prevent future disturbances. He also noted that discussions with various municipal and district chief executives (MMDCEs) have been held to strengthen governance and service delivery.

Addressing Power Outages and Infrastructure Challenges

The minister acknowledged complaints about power outages in parts of the region and assured that steps have been taken to resolve the issues. He stated that faulty transformers have been replaced, and efforts are ongoing to ensure stable electricity supply.

On infrastructure, Dr. Amoakohene disclosed that his office has identified 618 stalled government projects across the region. These projects, funded through different sources such as GETFund, DACF, and GNPC, are being reviewed to facilitate their completion.

Fight Against Illegal Mining (Galamsey)

The minister reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to ending illegal mining, particularly in forest reserves and water bodies.

He announced a two-week ultimatum for all illegal miners operating in restricted areas to vacate or face enforcement action.

Additionally, he said “efforts are being made to restore degraded lands and protect vital water bodies” .

Collaboration with Political and Traditional Leaders

In a bid to foster inclusive governance, Dr. Amoakohene revealed that he has engaged representatives from 15 political parties, including the NPP, NDC, CPP, and PPP, to seek their support in the region’s development. He also reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with traditional authorities and other stakeholders to drive progress.

Commitment to Transparent Communication

Dr. Amoakohene pledged to work closely with the media to ensure transparency and accurate dissemination of information.

He announced plans to set up digital platforms, including a dedicated website and social media handles, where the public can access official updates and reports on regional developments.

Dr. Amoakohene’s first media briefing set the tone for his tenure as Ashanti Regional Minister. His priorities include security, infrastructure development, power supply improvements, and a renewed fight against illegal mining.

With his emphasis on collaboration and transparency, his administration aims to align with President Akufo-Addo’s broader vision for the region’s growth.
