The Ashanti North Regional Police Command has arrested eight suspected highway robbers following a special intelligence-led operation in the Ejura area.
According to a press release issued by the Police Public Affairs Unit in Mampong on March 31, 2026, the suspects are believed to be connected to a robbery incident that occurred on March 26 at the Aframso Bridge on the Mampong–Ejura Highway.
Police said the robbery happened at about 3:30 p.m. when six armed men attacked a commercial minibus driver, identified as Appiah Joseph, who was transporting 14 passengers from Kumasi to Atebubu. The victims were reportedly robbed of cash and mobile phones.
Following the incident, police intelligence teams mounted surveillance on the suspects. Acting on the intelligence, a special operation team from the Ashanti North Regional Command moved to Ejura on March 30 and raided a location identified as Amakwa Dadey Hotel, where the suspects were found allegedly sharing money believed to be proceeds from the robbery.
Eight suspects were arrested during the operation. Police identified them as Amidu Sajo, 42; Ibrahim Sule, 36; Karim Hadu, 40; Malik Jibrilla, 38; Yusifa Asakoko, 23; Umaru Issifu, 20; Damani Yamba, 36; and Ibrahim Iddrisu, also known as “Bule,” aged 43.
Police said Iddrisu, who was reportedly on a wanted list in connection with a 2023 robbery case on the Mampong–Ejura road, attempted to flee during the operation and allegedly attacked an officer.
He later died while receiving treatment at the Jamasi Pope John Paul Hospital after being taken from the Mampong Government Hospital.
The police also retrieved several items during the operation, including live ammunition, three cutlasses, a cash amount of GH¢15,717, eight mobile phones, an identification card, and other items believed to be linked to the robbery.
The remaining suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while authorities say the operation is ongoing to arrest additional suspects and recover more weapons in the area.
The Ashanti North Regional Police Command reiterated its commitment to combating highway robbery and urged the public to continue cooperating with the police to ensure the safety of residents and road users.
