Outspoken comedian and social media commentator Afia Schwarzenegger, known in private life as Valentina Nana Agyeiwaa, has alleged that New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has received a payment of GHS 640 million from government.
According to Afia Schwarzenegger, the payment was made by the Finance Ministry immediately after Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson took over as Minister of Finance under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.
She made the claim in a Facebook Video post, questioning the urgency of the payment and the link between Agyapong and the ruling NDC government.
“This is a statement of fact. I’m not alleging,” she stated. “The payment was supervised by the Finance Minister in a country where the government claims there is no money to pay student allowances, employ new workers, or settle debts owed to contractors.”
Afia Schwarzenegger further warned Oman FM, a media outlet owned by Kennedy Agyapong, to refrain from attacking her, threatening to expose what she described as “damning information” about the organization and its owner.
Finance Minister Denies Allegations
In response, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson categorically denied the claims, stating that no contractor, including Kennedy Agyapong, has received any payment since he assumed office.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Ato Forson wrote:
“Since I took office, no contractor—including Kennedy Agyapong—has been paid a pesewa. We are currently conducting a comprehensive review of all contracts and payment requests to verify their legitimacy.
Please disregard any claims suggesting that I have authorized payment to Kennedy Ohene Agyapong or any other contractor.”
The Minister further assured the public that his office remains committed to transparency and will respond swiftly to any misinformation or disinformation regarding financial matters.
The allegation has sparked discussions about the government’s approach to settling debts owed to contractors, especially in light of economic challenges affecting various sectors, including education and employment.
As the controversy unfolds, both Afia Schwarzenegger and the Finance Ministry remain firm in their respective positions, fueling further debate over the credibility of the claims and the government’s financial priorities.
