Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has dismissed rumors of his intention to establish a new political party, affirming his unwavering commitment to the foundational principles of the NPP.
Speaking in an interview on Abusua965FM’s program AbusuaNkommo hosted by Kojo Marfo, Afoko challenged the rationale behind creating a new party, emphasizing that any new entity would struggle to differ in principles from the original NPP.
Afoko stated, “The original New Patriotic Party has principles. Am I going to form a party with different principles? It would be the same principles because I stand by those abiding principles.”
He stressed that the focus should be on uniting within the existing party, rather than forming a new one.
He attributed current challenges within the NPP to leadership issues, saying, “It is the management today in the NPP that I believe has lost its way. We have deviated from the true path, so we should all come together and move forward as one party, believing in those founding principles.”
Afoko recalled the widespread loyalty to the party’s principles across diverse regions, stressing, “When I campaigned, I told people in various areas from Bawku to Kwadaso, Aflao to Western Region’s Elibo they may not know each other, but all have signed up for NPP principles and vote accordingly for the same party.”
He argued that this shared commitment deny the need for splinter groups, adding, “Why should I wake up and say I am going to establish my own party?”
Responding to questions about whether he would lead a newly formed party, Afoko was resolute, “You have to show me the principles they stand on to form the new party. If those principles are the same as the New Patriotic Party, which traces back to the Northern Peoples Party, then what new difference would that party offer for me to join? If the principles don’t change, why change parties?”
