A group of aggrieved members of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) has distanced itself from a planned nationwide strike set to begin on February 20, 2025.
In a strongly worded statement dated February 13, 2025, the group criticized the CLOGSAG leadership for calling the strike over the appointment of Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway as the head of the Births and Deaths Registry, rather than addressing pressing welfare concerns of members.
According to the statement, the Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG justified the strike by claiming that Mr. Botchway is a politically exposed person.
However, the aggrieved members argue that the appointment falls within the President’s authority, as outlined in Section 2 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act 2020 (Act 1027) and Article 195 of the Constitution.
The group criticized CLOGSAG’s leadership for what they described as misplaced priorities, stating that instead of tackling urgent matters such as salary improvements and pension deductions, the leadership is focusing on political issues that do not serve members’ interests.
Key Concerns Raised by Aggrieved CLOGSAG Members
The aggrieved members listed three major concerns they believe CLOGSAG should prioritize:
- Improving Working Conditions – Ensuring better conditions for staff in the Local Government and Civil Service.
- Implementation of the Enhanced Salary Structure (ESS) – Calling for immediate implementation without further delays.
- Stopping Unlawful Pension Deductions – Urging the leadership to halt the deductions under the Pempasie Tier 3 scheme.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to lawful actions and stated that they would not participate in the strike. Instead, they will continue working while urging the CLOGSAG leadership to refocus its efforts on issues that genuinely affect members’ welfare.
With this division within CLOGSAG, the effectiveness of the planned strike remains uncertain, as more members may choose to break away and prioritize their professional duties over political grievances.
Calls for Dialogue
The development highlights growing dissatisfaction among CLOGSAG members regarding the leadership’s decision-making processes. Many are calling for a dialogue between the leadership and members to address concerns transparently and ensure that the union remains focused on workers’ welfare rather than political disputes.
As the February 20 strike date take off, all eyes will be on how CLOGSAG’s leadership responds to the dissenting voices within its ranks.
