The District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru, Central Region, has dismissed an injunction that sought to bar Cynthia Morrison from contesting as an independent parliamentary candidate for the Agona West Constituency in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
The injunction, filed by Emmanuel Addison, aimed to prevent Morrison from presenting herself as a candidate until a legal dispute regarding her eligibility was fully resolved.
Addison argued that Morrison, a former Member of Parliament (MP) for Agona West, resides in the Agona East constituency, thus challenging her right to contest in Agona West.
Morrison, who won the Agona West seat under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in both the 2016 and 2020 elections, decided to run as an independent after accusing the NPP of treating her unfairly during the party’s primary for the 2024 election.
In response to the case, Morrison’s legal team, led by Ishmael Kofi Turkson, has filed a motion to transfer the case from the District Court to the High Court.
Speaking to Kasapa News, Cynthia Morrison expressed confidence in her candidacy and dismissed concerns over the ongoing legal battles.
She also revealed that certain individuals are planning to sue her over accountability issues during her tenure as Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, particularly regarding COVID-19 funds.
Morrison, however, remains unfazed, stating she is ready to defend herself against any such claims.
The case has been adjourned to October 25, 2024, for further proceedings.
