Dr. Stephen Amoah, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso, has alleged that former President Nana Akufo-Addo selected him as the preferred choice for Minister of State for Finance, only for the appointment to be rejected by someone who said they wanted ‘someone from his tribe’.
Speaking to NPP faithful at the Assemblies of God Church in Kumasi ahead of the party’s presidential primaries on January 31, Amoah made the bold disclosure while urging supporters to back Kennedy Agyapong’s candidacy.
He framed his remarks as a divine testimony, swearing on his soul in the church setting to underscore their truthfulness.
“We are in church; I don’t want to say certain things because of some elderly people I’ve been quiet,” Amoah said. “God is my witness if I am lying, I am at the Assemblies of God Church. Nana Addo wanted to make me Minister of State Finance.”
He stopped short of naming the individual who allegedly intervened but repeatedly pointed to tribal affiliations as the reason.
“If you like, pray and ask who said he doesn’t want me but someone from his tribe,” Amoah added. “I just don’t want to say things. You all sit there to be deceived. If I am lying, my soul is with the Lord.”
Amoah, a long-serving NPP member with nearly 30 years of dedication to the party, highlighted his credentials in financial economics to bolster his claim of deserving the role.
“I’ve sacrificed and served this party for close to 30 years,” he stated. “Finance the whole world if you take five people in the financial economic module, I am number five: 1964, 1976, 1997, 2000, and 2001 is me the whole world. It’s not that I don’t deserve Finance Minister.
“I haven’t mentioned anyone’s name, but ask who said he doesn’t like me but his tribesman,” he stressed.
The MP then pivoted to rally support for Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, drawing parallels to past electoral successes.
“I am telling you today: never make any mistake, never make any mistake,” he emphasized. “Kennedy when no one was supporting him he got almost 40%. This election, by the grace of God, he’s winning.”
