The Asante Youth Association (AYA) has issued a strong statement condemning what it describes as “unprovoked and uncouth attacks” by Kwame Baffoe Abronye, the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), against former Minister of Health Dr. Richard Winfred Anane.
In a press release dated November 6, 2025, the group expressed “deep disappointment and indignation” over comments Abronye made on his television program, The Evidence, in which he allegedly launched a verbal assault on Dr. Anane — a senior party figure and a patron of AYA.
“Dr. Anane is a distinguished statesman, a former Minister of State, and a revered figure within Asanteman and the political history of the Fourth Republic,” the statement said. “For Abronye to single him out for vile insults is not only unfortunate, but it also reflects a worrying culture of political indiscipline and disrespect that must be condemned.”
‘Ashanti Region Will Not Tolerate Divisive Politics’
The association cautioned that the Ashanti Region would not tolerate Abronye’s “brand of divisive politics,” which it said contradicts the cultural values and political maturity of Asanteman.
“The youth of Asanteman are committed to promoting politics of respect, ideas, and progress—not foul-mouthed theatrics,” AYA stated.
AYA further warned all political figures, including presidential and parliamentary aspirants, not to include Abronye in any campaign activities within the region.
“AYA strongly cautions all presidential aspirants, parliamentary figures, and regional leaders that Abronye himself should not be brought as part of any campaign entourage to the Ashanti Region. The region has its pride, cultural values, and deep respect for leadership,” the release noted.
Calls for Party Action
The association also urged the national leadership of the NPP to publicly distance the party from Abronye’s comments and to take disciplinary action against him to restore order and discipline.
“It is individuals like Abronye who have contributed to the dwindling respect and declining goodwill of the party among the populace,” the group said, adding that such conduct undermines party unity and cohesion.
Background
Tensions have been simmering within the NPP after reports surfaced that Abronye had made disparaging remarks about Dr. Anane’s professional integrity following a recent dispute over comments made at a party meeting involving former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
The party’s Acting National Chairman, Danquah Smith Butey, has since attempted to downplay the incident, calling it a misunderstanding.
However, the AYA’s latest statement marks one of the strongest condemnations yet from a regional youth group affiliated with Asanteman, reflecting growing unease over the tone of political discourse within the ruling party.
The statement was jointly signed by Dr. Tweneboah Kodua, General Secretary, and Joseph Oppong Boadi, Vice President of the Asante Youth Association.
“Never again will we tolerate disrespect against prominent icons in politics, academia, business, and the corporate world who have served Asanteman and Ghana with dignity,” the statement concluded. “Our heritage demands respect, and it shall be accorded.”
