The Ashanti Region has recorded the highest number of people living with HIV in Ghana, according to the Ghana AIDS Commission’s latest update on the national HIV and AIDS response.

The report, which provides a regional breakdown of HIV estimates, shows that Ashanti leads with 73,245 cases, followed closely by the Greater Accra Region with 70,855 cases.

The Eastern Region ranks third with 47,866 cases. Overall, Ghana’s total HIV population is estimated at 346,120.

Other regions with significant numbers include the Western Region (25,620), Central Region (24,881), and Volta Region (20,949).

At the lower end of the scale, the North East Region recorded the fewest cases at 2,122, while Savannah registered 3,135 cases.

In terms of regional adult HIV prevalence, Bono Region recorded the highest rate at 2.5 percent, while the North East Region recorded the lowest prevalence at 0.6 percent.

Health experts say the figures underscore the need for targeted education, prevention, and treatment programs, especially in regions with high prevalence.

The Ghana AIDS Commission emphasized its continued efforts to strengthen awareness campaigns, expand access to antiretroviral treatment, and reduce stigma associated with the disease.
