A group of concerned members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Atebubu-Amantin Municipality has commended President John Dramani Mahama for considering Mr. Peter Menka Boadu for nomination as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
In a statement signed by their convener, Owusu Brobbey Daniel, and organizer, Clement Adjei, the group expressed optimism that Mr. Boadu’s potential nomination would foster inclusiveness, unity, and development in the municipality.
The group highlighted Mr. Boadu’s leadership qualities, business acumen, and long-standing commitment to the NDC as factors that make him an ideal choice for the position. They also emphasized that his Akan background could help strengthen the party’s support in Akan-dominated areas, which they say played a significant role in the NDC’s electoral loss in 2016.
“The votes the NDC pulls from the Akan communities cannot be underestimated. This was evident in the 2016 elections when we lost the parliamentary seat for the first time, largely due to a significant drop in votes from Akan communities,” the statement noted.
The group also raised concerns about the current political structure in the constituency, pointing out that most of the party’s executives, as well as the Member of Parliament, Hon. Sanja Nanja, are settlers or non-natives. They believe appointing an Akan as MCE would help create a strategic balance within the party, similar to the approach taken in other constituencies such as Wenchi, Kintampo South, Sene West, Pru West, and Asutifi South.
“As the constituency is led by Hon. Sanja Nanja, a settler MP, it is crucial for Mr. Boadu to work collaboratively with the MP and other stakeholders to address the unique needs and challenges of the Atebubu-Amantin Constituency,” they stated.
The group expressed confidence that Mr. Boadu’s leadership, if confirmed, would bring growth and progress to the municipality. They called on all NDC members to embrace the expected nomination for the benefit of the party and the development of the constituency.
While the President’s final decision is yet to be officially announced, the group remains hopeful that Mr. Boadu’s appointment will be confirmed.
