The youth of the Bolgatanga Central Constituency have expressed their disappointment and frustration over the exclusion of their Member of Parliament (MP), Isaac Adongo, from the ministerial appointments made by President John Dramani Mahama.
At a press conference held in Bolgatanga, the youth described the appointment of the MP as a board member of the Bank of Ghana as inadequate, stating that it cannot be a substitute for a ministerial position.
They argued that his contributions to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and his role as a key economic voice in opposition warranted a ministerial appointment.
“We have remained calm as the appointments were being made because Hon. Adongo appealed to us to respect the judgment of President Mahama. However, we can no longer stay silent,” the group stated.
They recalled that during his visit to the constituency on May 14, 2024, President Mahama assured them that Hon. Adongo’s efforts would be recognized with a ministerial role. The youth now believe that a powerful group within the government is deliberately sidelining their MP and the constituency.
Citing Isaac Adongo’s contributions to the NDC’s electoral success, they noted that he delivered over 35,000 votes to the party and played a crucial role in shaping economic debates in the country.
As a ranking member of the Finance Committee in Parliament, Hon. Adongo became widely known for his economic critiques, including statements such as “Walewale Adam Smith,” “Mallam Atta Market,” and “Footballer Maguire,” which they believe made Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) unpopular.
The group further pointed out that other regions and ethnic groups have been given multiple cabinet positions, questioning why Bolgatanga Central, the largest constituency in the Upper East Region, continues to be overlooked. They also recalled that previous NDC MPs from the constituency, such as Hon. Patrick Akake and Hon. Opam Brown, were either denied appointments or given minimal roles.
“The youth of Bolgatanga Central are angry and frustrated. We can no longer contain the pressure. If Hon. Adongo is not given a ministerial appointment, the party risks losing support in the constituency,” they warned.
They concluded their address by calling on President Mahama to “do the needful” by appointing Hon. Isaac Adongo as a minister, emphasizing that his leadership and economic expertise were critical for both the party and the nation.
