Breaking news: Government sets up committee to avert looming power crisis
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Government has sets up 12-member committee to avert looming power crisis in the country. The committee is expected to develop a road map to address both financial and technical issues. the committee will chair by John Jinapor.

The spokesperson for the presidency, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, assured the public that the government is taking decisive measures to address current energy supply challenges, which have raised significant concerns about national security and economic stability.

In a press briefing, Mr. Ofosu Kwakye acknowledged that disruptions to energy supply have been exacerbated by delays in key maintenance exercises and a lack of preparedness by the previous administration. “It suffices to say that the maintenance exercise on critical infrastructure, which should have been carried out in October last year, was not completed,” he said.

He added that the previous administration failed to secure alternative fuel supplies, including liquid oils, to mitigate potential disruptions. “This oversight has left the current administration in a position where urgent actions are required to procure the necessary resources and stabilize the energy situation.”

A high-level committee, comprising representatives from the entire energy value chain, has been formed to explore solutions. The government has emphasized the need to minimize disruptions while ensuring a sustainable resolution to the crisis.

Mr. Ofosu Kwakye revealed that President-elect consultations with the outgoing administration revealed significant gaps in preparedness, which shifted the responsibility to the incoming leadership. “It was made clear that certain key decisions were not taken, and this has left the current government with an immediate and significant challenge,” he noted.

The government has reiterated its commitment to adhere to timelines, particularly concerning plans to procure alternative fuels by January 20th. “We are determined to stick to this timeline and have taken all necessary steps to ensure that the required resources are secured,” he said.

Addressing public concerns, the spokesperson stressed that efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of the crisis, particularly on vulnerable populations. “This administration will not rest until the necessary measures are implemented to stabilize the energy sector and prevent further disruptions,” he concluded.

The government has called for patience and collaboration from stakeholders as it works toward resolving the issue, underscoring its commitment to transparency and accountability in addressing this pressing national concern.
