A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Captain Eyi Acquah, has called on party delegates and supporters to maintain consistency by re-electing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
In a statement titled “Consistency is the Best Way to Give NPP Political Power in 2028,” Captain Acquah argued that historical patterns within the NPP’s political tradition show that persistence and repeated candidacies have often led to victory.
Drawing parallels with key figures from the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and the United Party (UP) tradition, he cited examples of past leaders such as Prof. K.A. Busia, John Agyekum Kufuor, and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo—each of whom won power after multiple attempts.
“Busia contested three times before becoming Prime Minister in 1969. President Kufuor won on his second attempt in 2000, and President Akufo-Addo succeeded on his third attempt in 2016,” Captain Acquah noted.
He argued that this historical pattern underscores the importance of giving Dr. Bawumia another opportunity to lead the NPP into the 2028 elections, having already made his first presidential attempt in 2024.
“Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has already contested once for the presidential office. Repeating him for 2028 is in line with our victory route,” he stated.
Captain Acquah described Dr. Bawumia as the “commonsense option” for the NPP, warning that choosing a new flagbearer would be a political risk that could disrupt the party’s historical rhythm of success.
“Any contrary view is respected, but a gamble for a fresh flagbearer is not worth taking. No prudent captain will set sail against the winds, currents, and waves,” he emphasized.
He further likened political consistency to a “natural order,” asserting that the party’s tradition of perseverance and continuity has historically led to electoral triumphs.
Captain Acquah concluded his statement by appealing directly to NPP delegates to renew Dr. Bawumia’s mandate as the party’s flagbearer in 2026, expressing confidence that doing so would secure victory for the NPP in the 2028 general elections.
“Let the majority of NPP delegates cast their votes to re-elect Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as NPP flagbearer in 2026 and presidential candidate for 2028. This will offer the NPP the victory ticket for Election 2028,” he declared.
