The Convention People’s Party (CPP) says it will take legal action against the government if authorities fail to refund money paid by hundreds of thousands of young Ghanaians who applied for recruitment into the country’s security services.
In a statement signed by the party’s National Communications Director, Osei Kofi Acquah, the CPP accused the government of unfairly profiting from applicants who paid fees during a recent recruitment exercise for the security services.
The party said the government, led by John Dramani Mahama, invited young people across the country to apply for positions in the security services, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Prisons Service, and Ghana National Fire Service.
According to the CPP, although the government allegedly had financial clearance to recruit only about 5,000 personnel, recruitment forms were sold to approximately 500,000 applicants.
The party further alleged that each applicant paid GH¢220 for a voucher, which it claims resulted in the collection of about GH¢113 million from applicants who were ultimately unsuccessful.
The CPP also criticized remarks it attributed to the chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, describing them as dismissive of young people who were not selected during the recruitment process.
According to the party, the comments—circulating in a video on social media—appeared to mock applicants who were disqualified from the recruitment exercise. The CPP said such remarks should not be taken lightly, particularly given the expectations many young people placed on the recruitment as an opportunity for employment.
The party is demanding that the government issue an immediate apology to affected applicants and provide an alternative employment pathway for them.
It also called for a full refund of the voucher fees paid by applicants, warning that failure to do so would result in the CPP initiating legal action on behalf of those affected.
“The CPP stands with the Ghanaian youth in this situation and will pursue justice to ensure that those affected are treated fairly,” the statement said.
The party urged government officials to prioritize job creation for young people and to address the concerns raised by applicants who participated in the recruitment exercise.
The government and the NDC had not yet publicly responded to the CPP’s claims at the time of filing this report.
