Dr. Nana Ayew Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Effiduase Asokore, has lodged a complaint with the National Media Commission (NMC) against two media outlets owned by Media General. He alleges that they misrepresented his remarks on illegal mining (galamsey) and disseminated false information.
According to reports, Dr. Afriyie was quoted as saying that the NPP government would not end galamsey because doing so could affect the party’s chances in the upcoming December general elections. However, the MP insists that his comments were taken out of context and distorted by the media.
In a letter submitted to the NMC by his legal team, Dr. Afriyie accused the media houses of editing his statements in an unprofessional manner, with the aim of damaging his reputation as a medical doctor, politician, and Member of Parliament.
His lawyers are currently awaiting feedback from the NMC after the complaint was forwarded to Media General for their response. A letter from the NMC has also been seen, requesting Media General to address the matter.
In a related development, Dr. Afriyie is facing a separate petition to the Ghana Medical Association (GMA). Dr. Samuel Ayeh, a member of the GMA, has called on the association to bring Dr. Afriyie before its disciplinary committee for opposing the association’s stance on illegal mining.
Dr. Ayeh argues that the MP’s comments undermine the GMA’s position and called for strong sanctions to demonstrate the association’s commitment to fighting galamsey, while also reinforcing the ethical standards expected of medical practitioners in Ghana.
