Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed deep concern over the arrest and continued detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi.
Dr. Bawumia described the circumstances surrounding his detention as troubling and unclear.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for transparency and adherence to the rule of law, stressing that “no Ghanaian regardless of political affiliation or status should ever be denied their constitutional rights.”
“The charges remain vague, and his whereabouts remain unknown,” Dr. Bawumia noted, adding that he has been in constant contact with Mr. Antwi-Boasiako’s legal team to ensure his rights are protected and that due process is observed.
The former Vice President commended Wontumi’s legal team for their “professionalism and vigilance” and called on the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and other relevant state institutions to act strictly within the confines of the law.
“Justice and due process are not optional; they are the foundation of our democracy,” he said. “Ghana must always remain a nation governed by law not by arbitrary power.”
Dr. Bawumia warned that any deviation from legal principles risks eroding public trust in the country’s justice system and undermining democratic values.
“Our Republic is strongest when our institutions are both firm and fair,” he concluded.
As of now, EOCO has not issued a formal statement regarding the reasons for Wontumi’s detention.
