The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ashanti Region, has introduced stricter measures to reduce planned power outages and improve electricity supply reliability across the region.
The initiative, being implemented by the Operations Division, is designed to ensure that customers benefit fully from ongoing government-supported network upgrade projects while limiting disruptions to electricity supply.
General Manager of Ashanti Sub-Transmission, Ing. Kofi Apau Ohenese, announced the measures during an operations engagement with General Managers and Regional Engineers from across the Ashanti Region in Kumasi on Monday, September 28, 2026.
Under the new operational approach, ECG aims to limit planned maintenance outages to a maximum of two days a week and, where practicable, restrict each feeder to one planned outage per month.
Maintenance teams have also been directed to request outages only for the specific sections of a network requiring attention. This means entire feeders will no longer be shut down when maintenance work is needed on only one or two tee-offs.
For long feeders, ECG will also seek to isolate sections closer to fault locations. The measure is intended to prevent customers who are far from the affected area from unnecessarily losing power.
Ing. Ohenese said the measures were necessary to further reduce planned outages and improve the experience of electricity consumers.
“Reduced outages make our customers very happy. It also extends the lifespan of our circuit breakers and other major network equipment, while enabling us to sell more electricity to our customers,” he said.
He, however, clarified that the new measures do not apply to emergency faults, which require immediate attention to restore power and protect the network.
Ing. Ohenese urged operational teams to adopt more targeted and efficient maintenance practices, stressing that the objective was not to compromise essential maintenance activities but to minimise their impact on customers.
The initiative forms part of ECG Ashanti’s broader efforts to improve network reliability and ensure that investments in system upgrades result in tangible improvements in electricity supply to households, businesses and industries.
Ing. Ohenese expressed confidence that sustained implementation of the measures would enable customers to enjoy longer periods of uninterrupted power supply while improving the efficiency, reliability and sustainability of ECG’s network operations.
