Samuel Dubik Mahama, the Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has announced his resignation after more than two years in the role.
In a letter to the Board Chairman, Mahama cited personal reasons for his decision to step down, effective in two weeks.
Mahama expressed his gratitude in the letter, stating, “After much reflection, I have decided to step away for personal reasons. This has not been an easy decision, but I believe it is in my best interest to do so.”
He continued, “It has been an honour to serve this esteemed organisation for the past two years and four months. I would like to thank the Board for their unwavering support and guidance throughout my tenure. I am also deeply grateful to the President for the trust and confidence placed in me during this time.”
Mahama’s resignation has caught many in Ghana’s energy sector by surprise, especially given his relatively short time in the position. He was appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and officially assumed the role on May 16, 2022. Prior to becoming Managing Director, he served as a non-executive director at ECG, bringing with him a wealth of experience from various sectors.
His background includes roles such as non-executive director at GIHOC Distilleries, country representative for Gulfsouth Forest Products, and partner at Dubik & Associates and Wilkins Engineering. A legal practitioner by profession, Mahama is also a graduate of the University of Ghana.
Despite the surprise nature of his resignation, both ECG and government officials have remained tight-lipped about any specific reasons behind his decision, leaving the energy sector to speculate on the unexpected move.
