Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education and NPP presidential aspirant hopeful, has strongly refuted claims that the eight-year tenure of President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo was unsuccessful.
In an interview with Ebenezer Yaw Jonah on AbusuaAdwenekyere at AbusuaFM, Dr. Adutwum highlighted significant achievements made during the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) administration, especially within the education sector.
“We did a lot of work in our eight years,” Dr. Adutwum asserted.
He pointed to the remarkable progress Ghana made in education under their leadership, noting that the country’s education ranking improved dramatically from 30th position to number 2 in certain assessments.
“How can anyone say we or I didn’t do well?”
The former education minister emphasized infrastructure development as a cornerstone of their efforts.
He recounted how many public schools, once in deplorable conditions such as those in Jatokrom, Nagode, and Nyinahini were demolished and rebuilt.
“We built schools that have never been built before in Ghana,” he said.
A particularly notable accomplishment, Dr. Adutwum said, was the inauguration of 80 new schools in a single day across various levels, including basic schools, junior high schools, and senior high schools.
This milestone, he noted, was a product of intense dedication and hard work, with strong support from former President Akufo-Addo.
Despite these gains, Dr. Adutwum acknowledged challenges in governance and communication.
“Not all plans go as expected, and sometimes we have not communicated our achievements effectively,” he admitted.
He also highlighted a culture of humility in leadership that may have limited wider public recognition of their successes. Nonetheless, he remained confident that “people appreciate the work we have done.”
