President John Dramani Mahama has officially approved the reappointment of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu for an additional two-year term following his scheduled retirement in December 2025.
The decision comes after a recommendation from the Police Council and aligns with the legal framework governing the Ghana Police Service.
A statement signed by Callistus Mahama, Ph.D., Secretary to the President, confirmed the extension under the heading “RE-ENGAGEMENT AS INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE.”
Effective from December 28, 2025, IGP Yohunu will continue to lead the Ghana Police Service, maintaining responsibility for the office’s duties throughout the extended tenure.
The President’s approval underscores a strong endorsement of IGP Yohunu’s leadership during a crucial period marked by ongoing reforms and efforts to enhance operational efficiency and stability within the police service.
The statement also called on IGP Yohunu to formally accept the reappointment in writing within three days of receiving the notification.
Prior to the official announcement, reports circulating on social media revealed the Police Council’s recommendation for a two-year contract extension, signaling confidence in IGP Yohunu’s continued role ahead of his mandatory retirement.
