The Obuasi East Parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 General elections, Samuel Aboagye has served notice that he will fight for justice for the people in his constituency by reverting the illegal re-collation.
Speaking to the media in Kumasi, Mr. Aboagye said the will of the people, which was demonstrated in the collated result, which declared him the winner, will legally be protected.
The Electoral Commission initially declared Samuel Aboagye the MP-elect with a total of 18,558 votes, narrowly surpassing Dr. Boakye Yiadom’s 18,539 votes—a margin of just 19 votes. Adjei Owusu Afriyie, an independent candidate, garnered 424 votes.
Weeks after the declaration, the New Patriotic Party filed an application for Mandamus at the High Court seeking an order to compel the Electoral Commission (EC) to collate and declare parliamentary results in some specific constituencies.
On record, obuasi East was not part of that mandamus application, but the electoral commission used questionable means to re-collate, after which the result was overturned in favor of his closest condender and the incumbent MP Dr. Patrick Boakye Yiadom. Dr. Boakye garnered 18,558, representing 49.46%, while Samuel Aboagye got 18,539, representing 49.41%.
Dr. Patrick Boakye Yiadom has since been sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament Honorable Alban Bagbin.
This, according to Mr. Aboagye amounts to travesty of justice, which must not allow to stand.
He said he was duly elected by the people of Obuasi east hence see no reason why there was any recollation alleging that ” some components of the electoral commission” did everything possible to change the will of the people at the collation centre.
Backing his claim, he cited intimidation by state actors, especially the military prior, during and after the elections.
” My personal security as well as my party executive were brutally beaten and manhandled by the military, which was captured and widely condemned.”
Again, he said that because the NPP admitted that they lost the election, Dr. Patrick Boakye Yiadom signed the pink sheet indicating a concession of defeat.
He said this leads credence to the reason why the issue of Obuasi East was not considered by the Npp when filing application for Mandamus.
” The most painful thing is, institutions that are supposed to protect our democracy and security of the people are biased and don’t actually care about our democracy and security,” he said.
He assured that he would use all legitimate means to reverse the decision of the High court and ensure that justice is served and the will of the people is protected.
