The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), like all peace-loving institutions and individuals, is looking forward to peaceful elections in December 2024.
Contrary to reports suggesting an intention to stage a coup, GAF has strongly denied these claims. In a press release issued by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, the Director General of Public Relations for GAF, the public is urged to refrain from using the military’s name to escalate political tension.
“GAF has no intention of staging a coup and will resist any individual, group, or organization attempting to unlawfully seize government power, whether acting alone or in collaboration with any security agency,” the statement emphasized.
The release also clarified that GAF will only assist the Ghana Police Service upon request, and such support does not equate to an overthrow of the government.
The statement further addressed allegations made by Dr. Akwetey, who claimed that GAF threatened to take control of the country if elections turned violent beyond the control of the Ghana Police Service during press conferences held in 2016 and 2020.
“The allegation by Dr. Akwetey is unfounded, as the Ghana Armed Forces has never held any press conference declaring its intention to take over the country,” GAF concluded.
