A fire outbreak at the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) substation in Akosombo has disrupted electricity supply to parts of the Ashanti Region, prompting the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to announce a temporary power outage on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
According to ECG, the incident at the Akosombo substation significantly reduced power supply to the Ashanti Region, necessitating load curtailment in several communities between 12:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
The affected areas include Abakomade, parts of Abuakwa, Tanoso, Fumesua, Ejisu, Tetrem, Adwumam, Fawoade, Asawase, KNUST, Airport Roundabout, Bantama, Buokrom, Kronum, Kwadaso, Santase, and Adum, among many others within Kumasi and its environs.
ECG indicated that power will be restored once the voltage profile improves, assuring customers that efforts are underway to stabilise supply as quickly as possible.
The company apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents and businesses, noting that the outage is beyond its immediate control due to the nature of the incident at the transmission level.
The disruption has affected both residential and commercial activities across the region, with power expected to be fully restored later in the day.
