Julius Debrah apologises to Church of Pentecost over Free Zones CEO’s galamsey response
Share on WhatsApp

The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has apologised to the Church of Pentecost over controversial remarks made by the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr. Mavis Awusi, about the church’s Chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamekye.

The apology follows mounting public backlash over the comments, which were made in response to concerns raised by the Church about the environmental damage caused by illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

During the Church’s General Council Meeting, Apostle Nyamekye had raised serious concerns about the environmental degradation caused by galamsey operators.

He pointed out that the pollution of rivers and streams has become so severe that some Christian communities are now unable to perform traditional baptism rites in natural water bodies, forcing them instead to rely on artificially constructed pools.

Among those who responded was Dr. Mavis Awusi, whose comments during a media interview drew criticism after she issued a warning to the church leader, suggesting he would be “dealt with” should he continue to make such statements.

In an effort to ease tensions and restore cordial relations, Julius Debrah used the occasion of his birthday celebration at the Church of Pentecost in Trasacco on Sunday, April 26, to address the matter directly before the congregation.

Standing before members of the church, the Chief of Staff expressed regret over the incident and appealed for forgiveness, stating that the comments made by Dr. Awusi did not reflect any deliberate attempt to undermine or disrespect the church.

“God continue to bless you. But the chairman of our church, you know, myself, Elder Ofosu Ampofo, our Local Government Minister and several others, are members of your church. A few days ago, one of our colleagues, Dr. Mavis Awusi, slipped a bit against you. I want on this occasion to commemorate my birthday, to let the whole church forgive us.

“It was just a slip. It wasn’t intentionally done to malign our church. I believe sincerely that you forgive her and forgive us and accept us as your children. God richly bless all of you.”
