Pregnant women and other residents in three farming communities in the West Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region could be left without emergency medical care after floods cut off the communities from Damongo for nearly two weeks.
The overflow of the Sor River has submerged the only road linking Sor No. 1, Sor No. 2 and Sor No. 3 to the municipal capital, making it impossible for ambulances and other vehicles to reach the communities.
Assembly Member for the Sor Electoral Area, Seidu A. Fuseini, popularly known as Hon. Fuzzy, said the situation had also disrupted schooling and farming, with teachers unable to cross the flooded section and farmers struggling to access their farms.
He said he had documented the damage and forwarded photographs to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja, Yakubu Yussif Castro, but no intervention had yet reached the affected communities.
Hon. Fuzzy warned that the lack of road access could have serious consequences in the event of a medical emergency.
“If there is any health emergency or if there is the need for an ambulance to go to these communities to pick a pregnant woman to hospital, an ambulance cannot go there,” he stated.
He is therefore calling on the MCE to urgently engage the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) Coordinator to deploy equipment to the area and restore the road to a motorable condition.
He said urgent action was needed before the continuing rains further worsen the situation and deepen the isolation of the affected communities.
