Former Member of Parliament for the Nhyeaso Constituency, Kennedy Kwabena Kankam, has called on the national leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to sanction Michael Okyere Baafi, the MP for New Juaben South, for allegedly abandoning his responsibilities during the Akwatia by-election.
Speaking on Kumasi-based Abusua FM with Kojo Marfo, monitored by Kumasi Mail, Kennedy Kankam criticized Okyere Baafi for leaving the collation center during the vote-counting process.
“Truth be told, the way our people abandoned the collation center during the process was unacceptable. The Party must question the person they appointed to lead the NPP’s collation team,” he said.
The former Nhyeaso MP stressed that the party must take the matter seriously. “Okyere Baafi was not forced to take that responsibility. If you accept such a role, you must see it through, regardless of whether the results favor your candidate or not,” he added.
He recounted his own experience in 2008 and 2024, saying he continued to work for the party even after electoral losses.
“After the 2008 elections, I still went on radio the next day to defend the party. In 2024, after the NPP lost, I continued working until I was relieved of my position as MCE for Asokore Mampong. So why would Okyere Baafi abandon the collation center before the process was finalized?”
The former NPP Ashanti Regional Organizer warned that failure to address the issue could set a dangerous precedent.
“You can’t take such a position and mess things up for the party. If this issue is left unresolved, others may also abandon their duties in future elections without consequence. The national executives must act, or some of us will direct our anger toward them,” he cautioned.
Kennedy Kankam urged the party to take decisive action to ensure discipline and accountability among its election agents.
