Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Awentami Afoko, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, describing it as a “devastating blow” to Asanteman and to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In a statement issued on Monday, Mr. Afoko noted that the loss comes in the wake of the recent deaths of two prominent chiefs and a linguist within the Ashanti Kingdom.
He emphasized the particular pain for the Asantehene, who has now lost his only surviving sister and traditional mother.
“I am particularly saddened by such a devastating blow to the Otumfuo on the loss of his only surviving sister and traditional mother,” Afoko said.
Reflecting on his personal relationship with the Asantehene, Mr. Afoko recalled the “great honour” bestowed upon him earlier this year when Otumfuo sent a high-level delegation to attend the funeral of his late father in Sandema, Upper East Region.
He joined a broad spectrum of mourners including politicians, business leaders, clergy, traditional rulers, imams, and petitioners who have paid tribute to the Asantehene’s leadership and influence in national life.
Addressing the King directly, Mr. Afoko offered a traditional expression of condolence “Nana me ma wo due, due ne amanehunu. Due Damirifa Due.”
Nana Konadu Yiadom III served as Asantehemaa from 2017 until her passing. She was widely respected for her role in upholding Ashanti traditions and serving as a source of counsel to the Asantehene.
