The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has temporarily closed a section of the Kumasi–Ejura Road at Sataso following severe damage caused by recent heavy rains that rendered the road unsafe for vehicular traffic.
According to the Authority, the affected section was initially washed away during torrential rainfall on May 30, 2026, prompting emergency restoration works, including the construction of a temporary diversion to maintain traffic flow.
However, sustained and intense rainfall over the past three days destroyed a temporary culvert installed within the diversion route, making the road impassable.
In a public announcement issued by its Public Affairs Division, the GHA said the closure was necessary to protect road users and facilitate urgent reconstruction works.
“The affected road section is currently unsafe for vehicular movement,” the Authority stated, adding that emergency construction efforts are underway to restore connectivity as quickly as possible.
The Authority noted that the heavy rains caused the collapse of a critical culvert structure on the highway, while floodwaters also damaged the temporary diversion created to support traffic movement during the initial repairs.
As a result, motorists travelling between Kumasi and Ejura have been advised to use an alternative route through Mampong, Kofiase, Anyinasu, Sekyeredumase and Aframso before reconnecting to Ejura. Drivers travelling from Ejura towards Kumasi are expected to use the same route in reverse.
The GHA has urged motorists to comply with all traffic management measures along the diversion route, including speed limits, and to cooperate with traffic personnel and security officers deployed to assist road users.
The Authority assured the public that it is working closely with the contractor responsible for the project to restore the damaged section and reopen the road as soon as practicable.
It also expressed regret for the inconvenience caused and thanked commuters, transport operators and the general public for their patience and cooperation during the period of disruption.
