The first batch of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has presented a number of illegal firearms seized during anti-galamsey operations to the Ministry of the Interior, Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has announced.
According to the minister, the firearms were subsequently handed over to the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons for documentation, marking and eventual destruction in accordance with the law.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Mr. Muntaka commended the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and the NAIMOS team for what he described as their dedication and commitment to combating illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to transparency in the management of equipment and other items confiscated during anti-illegal mining operations.
The minister assured the public that all seized excavators and related equipment would be handled in accordance with established legal procedures.

“Details of such seizures and subsequent actions will be made public through the appropriate channels to ensure accountability,” he stated.
Mr. Muntaka also appealed to Ghanaians, particularly residents of communities affected by illegal mining activities, to continue supporting government efforts and the work of NAIMOS.
He noted that illegal mining remains a major threat to the country’s environment, water bodies, farmlands, as well as the health and livelihoods of many citizens.
Addressing newly deployed NAIMOS personnel, the minister urged them to discharge their duties with professionalism, integrity and dedication. He stressed the importance of maintaining public trust and remaining focused on their mandate to help achieve success in the national campaign against illegal mining.
The minister expressed confidence that sustained collaboration between government agencies, security personnel and local communities would help curb illegal mining and protect Ghana’s natural resources for future generations.
