GoldBod begins licensing of gold trading service providers, enforces new directives

The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has officially begun the licensing of service providers within the gold trading sector, as part of sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening regulation, transparency, and compliance in the industry.

In a press statement issued Wednesday, April 23, GoldBod announced that the licensing regime is now open to Ghanaian individuals aged 18 and above, as well as fully-owned Ghanaian companies.

Applicants can apply online via the official website goldbod.gov.gh or visit the license office at GoldBod’s headquarters in Accra.

The initial licensing categories available include; Aggregator License, Self-Financing ,Aggregator License, Buyer License (Tier 2) and Buyer License (Tier 1)

GoldBod also stated that additional licenses—such as Refining, Smelting, Fabrication, Storage, Transportation, and Importation—will be made available from July 2025.

This new licensing initiative follows GoldBod’s earlier directive ordering all foreigners to exit the local gold trading market by April 30, 2025. Any breach of this directive, the Board warned, constitutes a punishable offense under the Ghana GoldBod Act, 2025 (Act 1140). However, foreigners may still apply to GoldBod for gold off-take arrangements under approved conditions.

The Board also reiterated that all gold transactions must be conducted using the official Bank of Ghana (BoG) Reference Rate, published at www.bog.gov.gh, to ensure standardized and fair pricing across the sector.

GoldBod’s leadership has expressed its commitment to working with all stakeholders to streamline and restructure Ghana’s gold trading ecosystem to maximize national benefits. The reforms, it says, are designed to protect local businesses, curb illegal trading, and promote sustainable practices in the sector.

“We count on the full cooperation of the public and shall continue to prioritize your feedback,” said Prince Kwame Minkah, Media Relations Officer at GoldBod.

Further details, including application guidelines, policies, and operational mandates, are available on the official GoldBod website.
