The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to submit the details of all Assembly Members within their jurisdictions by May 9, 2025.
This move is in preparation for the payment of monthly allowances to Assembly Members across the country.
According to an official memo dated April 30, 2025, and signed by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Amin Abdul Rahaman, the initiative is part of efforts to reset the governance agenda as outlined in the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy.
Specifically, Section 395 on page 73 of the budget makes provision for the monthly remuneration of Assembly Members.
The directive, which was also copied to all Regional Ministers, urges MMDAs to use an attached template to compile and submit the required information to the Ministry’s Decentralisation Unit via email. Submissions are to be copied to a designated official at the Ministry.
Officials are urged to treat the directive as urgent to ensure the timely initiation of the allowance payments.
This initiative marks a significant step towards recognizing the contributions of Assembly Members in local governance and improving their welfare.
