Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has criticized the party’s leadership for its handling of recent developments, including support for victims of the Adum fire outbreak and plans for a nationwide “Thank You” tour.
Speaking on Asempa FM in Accra, in an interview monitored by www.kumasimail.com, Mr. Agyepong expressed disappointment over what he described as fragmented and uncoordinated relief efforts by party members following the devastating fire incident in Kumasi’s Adum area.
“I’m not happy with the way the NPP has handled support for the Adum fire victims. We should have presented a unified front as a party and as a country, rather than making individual donations,” he said.
He also raised concerns about internal party decisions, stressing the need for transparency and inclusivity in the lead-up to the 2028 general elections.
According to him, the party’s revival depends on honest introspection and genuine engagement with its grassroots members.
“The NPP can only come back to power in 2028 if we tell ourselves the truth and allow the base to decide who leads the party,” Mr. Agyepong stated.
On the party’s current activities, he questioned the relevance of a proposed “Thank You” tour by the leadership, suggesting it was not agreed upon by key decision-making bodies within the party.
“NPP NEC, National Council did not discuss or agree to a thank you tour,” he emphasized, adding, “The Thank You tour is unnecessary at this stage of our rebuilding process. The party should focus on the Prof. Mike Ocquaye Committee report and the next steps to take ahead of election 2028.”
Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and NPP’s Predidential candidate hopeful for election 2028 remarks have added to ongoing conversations about the future of the NPP, as the party regroups after its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
