The Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Professor Otchere Addai-Mensah, has been relieved of his position, ending a tenure marked by transformative healthcare advancements and infrastructural renewal at Ghana’s second-largest referral facility.
Appointed in 2022, Prof Addai-Mensah’s leadership ushered in a period of unprecedented progress at KATH, positioning the hospital on a path toward modernization and improved service delivery.
Although his contract was set to run until 2027, government sources have confirmed that he is expected to hand over his responsibilities to a new appointee by next week.
During his two-year administration, Prof Addai-Mensah was widely praised for his visionary approach to hospital management. His most notable legacy is the Heal Komfo Anokye Project (HeKAP), an ambitious renovation initiative launched under the auspices of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The project aimed to restore and retool the aging infrastructure of the hospital and transform it into a 21st-century medical facility.
Under Prof Addai-Mensah’s stewardship, the hospital’s capacity for renal treatment expanded dramatically. In 2022, KATH operated with just two dialysis machines.
Today, that number exceeds 20, thanks to targeted investment and stakeholder engagement spearheaded by the outgoing CEO. This expansion has significantly enhanced access to life-saving dialysis services in the Ashanti Region and beyond.
In addition to the renal unit, KATH saw the construction of a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical block and the procurement of advanced medical equipment across several departments.
His tenure also emphasized staff development, patient-centered care, and the digitization of hospital services to streamline operations and reduce wait times.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandor, in a private meeting with Prof Addai-Mensah, is said to have conveyed the government’s gratitude for his service, highlighting his dedication to repositioning KATH as a leading health institution.
Though his departure comes as a surprise to many within the healthcare community, Prof Addai-Mensah leaves behind a lasting imprint on KATH’s trajectory.
A government announcement on his successor is expected in the coming days.
