The Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) has surpassed the 100 mark in its PhD alumni population following the graduation of eight new doctoral scholars at its 22nd Graduation Ceremony.
The ceremony, held in Accra on Saturday, August 29, 2026, saw a total of 572 students graduate from the university’s doctoral, master’s and bachelor’s programmes.
The graduating class comprised eight PhD scholars, 69 master’s graduates and 495 bachelor’s graduates.
Of the bachelor’s graduates, 405 completed AIT’s campus-based programmes, while 90 graduated from its Open University programmes.
The latest doctoral graduates bring AIT’s cumulative number of PhD graduates to more than 100, marking the university’s 14th PhD graduation.
President of AIT, Professor Clement K. Dzidonu, described the milestone as significant for the relatively young university.
According to him, more than half of AIT’s PhD graduates have attained professorial rank within three years of completing their doctoral studies.
He said AIT’s contribution to Ghana’s higher education sector was also becoming increasingly evident, with its PhD graduates serving as faculty members across several public and private universities.
Prof. Dzidonu added that academic and senior administrative staff from almost all public and private universities in Ghana had undertaken doctoral studies at AIT.
Strengthening human capital
AIT’s postgraduate research programmes cover areas including Engineering, Information Technology, Education and Business Administration.
The university said the programmes form part of its contribution to research, innovation and Ghana’s science, technology and innovation agenda.
The 22nd Graduation Ceremony also added 69 master’s graduates and 495 bachelor’s graduates to the university’s alumni community, further expanding the pool of skilled professionals entering Ghana’s workforce.
Chairman of the AIT Board of Trustees, Emeritus Professor Ivan Addae-Mensah, commended the university for achieving key milestones despite its relatively young age.
He described AIT as “fast becoming a world-class private technological university” and urged the graduating class to see their graduation as the beginning of a new phase rather than an end in itself.
Emeritus Prof. Addae-Mensah challenged the graduates to apply the knowledge and opportunities gained from their education effectively as they pursue their professional and personal goals.
Graduates urged to embrace lifelong learning
Prof. Dzidonu, in addressing the graduates, urged them to commit themselves to continuous learning as artificial intelligence and emerging technologies continue to reshape industries and the world of work.
He introduced the concept of the “Sovereign Lifelong Learner”, describing graduates who take personal responsibility for continuously developing their skills, knowledge and professional capabilities.
He challenged the Class of 2026 to “See the Opportunity, Explore the Possibility and Create the Difference”.
Prof. Dzidonu encouraged the graduates to use their education not only to build successful careers but also to create value and contribute meaningfully to society.
AIT is accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to offer campus-based and Open University undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
The university is affiliated with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for its campus-based undergraduate programmes in engineering, computer science/IT and business administration.
Its Open University programmes are offered in affiliation with the Open University of Malaysia at the master’s and PhD levels.
