The Government of Ghana has repatriated the remains of a 37-year-old Ghanaian, Nash Amoonu Jailor, who was allegedly killed in a mob attack in South Africa at a time of heightened xenophobic tensions targeting foreign nationals.

Jailor’s body arrived in Ghana on Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 3 p.m. and was subsequently handed over to his bereaved family.

His death adds another painful dimension to the growing concerns over the safety of Ghanaians and other foreign nationals in South Africa, where renewed anti-foreigner sentiments and mob attacks in parts of the country have triggered fear among migrant communities.

The latest wave of xenophobic tensions, which intensified in parts of South Africa earlier this year, saw groups opposed to the presence of foreign nationals carrying out protests, harassment and alleged attacks against migrants.

The deteriorating security situation eventually forced the Government of Ghana to begin evacuating citizens who felt unsafe and voluntarily registered to return home.

Since May 2026, nearly 1,900 Ghanaians have been evacuated from South Africa under the government-led exercise, with the remains of Ghanaian nationals killed during the period also being repatriated.

Jailor’s case, however, predates the mass evacuation.

He was allegedly killed in a mob attack in March 2026 at East London, South Africa, under circumstances that have since become the subject of calls for a thorough investigation by the Ghanaian authorities.

The government, through the Ghanaian High Commission in Pretoria, has continued to demand a swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death and for those responsible to face justice.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who conveyed the government’s condolences to the bereaved family, urged them to remain strong as they come to terms with their loss.

The government covered the full cost of transporting Jailor’s remains to Ghana, ensuring that the family incurred no expenses in the repatriation process.

His remains arrive home as the government brings to a close its emergency evacuation exercise for Ghanaians affected by the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

The evacuation has itself been marked by tragedy, with two other Ghanaian nationals killed in separate attacks having their remains repatriated to Ghana, while a third returnee died shortly after arriving in Accra.

For the families involved, the government’s repatriation effort has therefore come not merely as an administrative response to a security crisis, but as the final journey home for loved ones whose lives were cut short far from their homeland.

The Government of Ghana has reiterated its commitment to protecting the safety and welfare of Ghanaians abroad and ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the deaths of its citizens are properly investigated and addressed.
