President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to convert Han Senior High School (SHS) in the Upper West Region from a day school into a boarding institution.
The announcement came when the President inspected five ongoing Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) projects at the school on Friday as part of his two-day #ResettingGhana Tour of the region.
President Mahama said the policy forms part of a broader realignment of the Community Day Senior High School model to reflect population patterns across the country.
He said day schools would be prioritised in densely populated communities, where students can easily commute from home, while schools in sparsely populated areas such as Han would be converted into boarding institutions.
The President assured the school that the conversion would be backed by the necessary infrastructure, including separate dormitories for boys and girls.
“We will not give you boarding status without building the necessary facilities,” he said, adding that the school would be formally redesignated after the required facilities are completed.
President Mahama also reiterated his government’s commitment to ending the double-track system in senior high schools by the end of 2027.
He said a $300 million World Bank facility would support the expansion of infrastructure in overcrowded schools to enable all students to attend classes simultaneously.
The facility will also finance the construction of 16 new senior high schools to help ease pressure on existing schools.
“These projects will continue, and we hope that by the end of 2027, no Ghanaian child will still be on the double-track system,” President Mahama said.
