Dr. Tony Aidoo, a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has launched a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing it of historical atrocities and undermining democratic institutions.
Speaking on Joy Express, Dr. Aidoo recalled his personal experiences with political violence, which he said shaped his opposition to the United Party (UP) tradition, the ideological predecessor of the NPP.
He alleged that his family suffered during a period of ethnic cleansing and political repression, emphasizing that his grandmother’s house once served as a sanctuary for those fleeing persecution.
“I became anti-UP because I saw the atrocities they committed. In my grand mother house in Mahyia Palace I witnessed how a fante woman was killed by the UP people because the woman was like to CPP. You the current generation have no idea crime against humanity they committed in Kumasi,” he said, linking past events to what he perceives as a continuation of undemocratic practices by the NPP.
Dr. Aidoo also referenced historical incidents such as political bombings and violence, stating that these actions have left lasting scars on Ghana’s political landscape.
“ At Prempeh Assembly hall while Kwame Nkrumah is Kumasi for a program UP now NPP sent people to bomb Nkrumah. The person they assign to kill Dr. Kwame upon seeing the huge crowd felt the causualty will be many and decided not to bomb the place’’ he said.
he further said ” In Manhyia in the late 60s if a UP person meet you and you do not greet them in a gesture that demonstrate you belongs to UP and you greet the person a normal greeting way you are dead . In my grand mother house I saw many kills. All my family members were UP member but I didnt like to be a member of UP because of the Atrocities I witnessed my my early days.” he narrated.
Added” so the UP people strategize and attacked Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in the Northern that that meaning of the Kumbugu Bombing’’ he explained.
He dismissed claims that the NPP upholds democracy, arguing that its leadership has compromised key institutions, including the judiciary and the Electoral Commission.
“The independence of our constitutional bodies has been eroded. The judiciary has been bastardized, and the Electoral Commission is no longer credible,” he asserted.
In response to arguments that the NPP has contributed to Ghana’s democratic progress—citing reforms such as the introduction of transparent ballot boxes and the repeal of the criminal libel law—Dr. Aidoo dismissed these achievements as mere rhetoric, insisting that the party’s actions contradict democratic principles.
