Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has vowed to pursue every person allegedly involved in the killing of a police officer at Gindabour in the Savannah Region.
Mr Yohuno said the Police Administration would leave no one allegedly connected to the killing beyond the reach of the law, regardless of their status or location.
“We have to get every soul, everybody that took part in the killing of our innocent police officer. And that is why we are here,” the IGP said during a visit to Gindabour.
General Constable Redeemer Owusu was killed during a confrontation between a police patrol team and some residents following the death of teacher Abu Seidu, popularly known as Afonja.
The IGP expressed concern over how the confrontation escalated, questioning why the officer was allegedly not given an opportunity to explain himself before the situation turned violent.
He also questioned why members of the community did not intervene to establish what had happened before the confrontation spiralled into violence.
According to Mr Yohuno, the deceased officer was performing his duties when he was confronted by some individuals.
He described Constable Owusu as an innocent officer from a poor family in the Upper West Region who had been serving the nation.
The IGP said the circumstances of the officer’s death raised serious questions that must be answered through investigation.
He stressed that incidents involving law enforcement personnel must be handled through due process rather than confrontation or mob action.
Mr Yohuno said he travelled to Gindabour to encourage police personnel deployed to the area and assure them of the Police Administration’s commitment to protecting officers performing their duties.
He urged communities to exercise restraint during encounters with security personnel and allow officers the opportunity to explain their actions before drawing conclusions.
The IGP said communities must not take the law into their own hands, stressing that disputes involving police officers should be resolved through lawful channels.
His visit forms part of efforts by the Police Administration to engage residents, boost the morale of personnel on the ground and support investigations into the officer’s death.
Mr Yohuno reaffirmed that the Police Administration would pursue all persons allegedly connected to the killing and ensure that the matter is subjected to the due process of law.
