The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has been busy this year, appearing on various media platforms to defend himself against criticisms over the party’s worst-ever electoral defeat in a competitive election.
The soft-spoken General Secretary, who was reportedly not the preferred choice of then-President Nana Akufo-Addo during the party’s last national executive elections, has faced mounting criticism from party faithful questioning his leadership capabilities to manage the party while in opposition.
Justin Kodua has repeatedly stated that the NPP lost the election to the NDC because the then-ruling government had distanced itself from its own party.
Speaking to Kwaku Kyeremanten Nkansah on Kumasi-based Wontumi FM, he reiterated, “The NPP lost the election because the government was far removed from the party.”
In his interview, Kodua denied accusations by internal opponents who have labeled him a weak leader who failed to put the government to check particularly on policies that made the party unpopular.
“I have heard people in our party, particularly those interested in my position, describing me as a weak leader. K.K., do I look like a weak person? Weak leaders cannot challenge their own government. I’m the only General Secretary who openly called for a reshuffle in the government and urged ministers to resign if they were no longer committed to serving the party,” he said.
Meanwhile, former Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency Eugene Boakye Antwi, along with former Member of Parliament for Bantama Constituency Henry Kwabena Kokofu, has announced their intentions to contest for the NPP’s General Secretary Position when nominations open.
Barring any last-minute changes, three individuals from the Ashanti Region, including Justin Frimpong Kodua, are expected to vie for the slot.
Despite the party’s poor performance under his leadership, Justin Kodua remains resolute, defending his leadership qualities and rejecting claims of weakness from party members.
