Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has proposed a 10-Pesewa levy on every litre of fuel purchased to fund the procurement of fire tenders for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Expressing concern over the outdated equipment used by firefighters, he noted that their efforts are often hindered by obsolete tools, leading to public criticism.
He announced plans to submit an official proposal to cabinet for consideration, emphasising the need to adequately resource the GNFS.
Muntaka Mubarak made these remarks during a visit to the Blue Light section of the Central Business District in Adum, which was gutted by fire on Friday, March 20.
“I am doing a paper to cabinet that look, the fuel that we buy, let’s dedicate just 10 Pesewas per liter just for fire. Because as we speak, when I went to the Ministry of Interior, I realised that the newest tender that we have was broken in 2014. That’s more than 10 years.
“You and I know the way they run. In about six, seven years, they will become obsolete. Yet the newest tender we have is more than 10 years old. For the whole 10 years as a country, we have not bought even a single fire tender. If we can do even five Pesewas on a litre, what it will means is that we will have a dedicated fund to support fire.”
