Yaw Acheampong Boafo, the outgoing President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), has refuted claims that the association is politically divided along party lines, with some lawyers aligning with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and others with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on StarrChat with EIB Network’s CEO, Nathaniel Kwabena Adisi Anokye, also known as Bola Ray, Boafo described the assertions as unfounded.
“It is not true that the GBA is an appendage of any political party,” Boafo stated emphatically. He explained that the perception of division within the Bar stems from Ghana’s unique constitutional history, particularly during the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) era when the country was under military rule.
According to him, during that period, there was natural agitation from those who believed in the rule of law and democracy, which later influenced political affiliations.
“The PNDC eventually metamorphosed into the NDC, and people have taken on that baggage. But it’s inaccurate to say the GBA is anti-NDC,” Boafo clarified.
He went on to challenge those who hold this view to provide any evidence where the GBA acted as a political tool, particularly under various administrations.
Boafo pointed out that no such accusations have been made against the association during the presidency of John Kufuor or other NPP leaders, highlighting the non-partisan nature of the GBA.
Yaw Acheampong Boafo’s comments aim to dispel longstanding rumors about political bias within the association as he prepares to hand over leadership to his successor.
