Member of Parliament and former presidential aspirant, Ken Ohene Agyapong, has called for calm in the conflict-prone Bawku area, urging all factions particularly the youth to reject violence and embrace peace.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Agyapong expressed deep concern over the resurgence of violence in Bawku and its surrounding areas, which has led to loss of lives and heightened tension in the region.
“The cycle of violence and reprisals continues to harm innocent lives and disrupt our path to national unity,” he said. “At this crucial moment, I urge all parties, especially the youth, to choose peace. No matter how deep the grievance, violence is never the answer.”
Agyapong praised President John Dramani Mahama for supporting the mediation process led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II—a peace initiative initially set up by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
“This is true statesmanship; putting Ghana above partisanship,” he noted, describing the collaborative approach as a necessary step toward long-term stability in the area.
He called on Ghanaians to unite behind the mediation effort, stating that peace in Bawku would contribute significantly to national cohesion.
“When Bawku is at peace, Ghana is stronger. We must move forward together,” he added.
The Bawku conflict, rooted in longstanding chieftaincy disputes, has seen intermittent outbreaks of violence despite various government and traditional efforts to mediate.
