Residents of Dote, a community in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region, have taken matters into their own hands by imposing a self-declared curfew following a wave of violent armed robbery incidents that have left many in fear for their lives.
The community says the escalating attacks have resulted in multiple injuries, loss of property, and growing anxiety among residents.
Speaking to the media the community provided chilling accounts from victims who described the robbers’ increasing boldness and brutality.
One female victim recounted her ordeal, saying, “I was attacked recently by unknown robbers. They took my phone, handbag containing money, and important documents.”
Another eyewitness shared, “I saw two men on a motorbike robbing a lady right outside my window. It was terrifying.”
An elderly woman also lamented that the thieves had vandalized her water pipe, expressing concern that their next target could be something even more vital.
The community’s head, Nana Kwaku Adu, disclosed that Dote previously relied on volunteer security personnel funded by local landlords.
However, he said that for the past three years, residents have been unable to sustain the arrangement due to financial constraints.
With fear and insecurity mounting, residents are now appealing to their Member of Parliament and the Asokore Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, Ben Abdallah Alhassan, to intervene.
They are calling for the re-establishment of a community watchdog committee and intensified police patrols to help restore safety and peace in the area.
