The Ntorowa, a set of decorated royal rattles used by the Asantehene, continues to hold deep symbolic and ceremonial importance in Asante royal tradition.
Beyond their aesthetic beauty, the red, gold, and green-colored rattles play a key role in various palace rituals and state occasions, each color representing a specific context of royal expression.
The Ntorowa serve as both musical and symbolic instruments, used by the Asantehene during dance performances—particularly the Kete, a royal court dance that embodies elegance, rhythm, and ancestral reverence.
During funerary or remembrance rites, the Asantehene performs the Kete dance with the “Ntoa Kɔkɔɔ”, a red-felt rattle signifying solemn reflection and reverence for the departed.
At times, before beginning his dance, the Asantehene accompanies the Kete orchestra himself, adding rhythm with the red rattle to mark the sanctity of the occasion.
The Ahaban Mono Ntoa, adorned with green felt, is reserved for the Asantehene’s dance with the Ahenyerenom—wives of the King—during Mmaadae, a special Adae ceremony dedicated to the royal women.
This ritual takes place in the evening at Hia, a section of the Manhyia Palace, following the main Akwasidae celebration.
On joyous and state occasions, including the Akwasidaekeseɛ (Grand Adae) and other major national or international events, the Asantehene uses the Akokɔ Sradeɛ Ntorowa, the rattle decorated with yellow felt.
This particular rattle symbolizes celebration, prestige, and the authority of the Golden Stool, and is often used when welcoming foreign dignitaries or marking significant achievements of the Asante Kingdom.
