In a bid to address chronic water shortages plaguing Ghana’s second-largest city, the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has confirmed a three-day shutdown of its Barekese Water Treatment Plant starting Monday, March 17, 2025.
The temporary closure, set to last until Wednesday, March 19, will enable critical upgrades to infrastructure at the Suame Roundabout, a key distribution hub.
The shutdown marks a pivotal step in GWCL’s strategy to modernize its aging network. Engineers will install new interconnection pipelines and foot valves designed to increase pressure and flow rates, directly benefiting over 1 million residents in the Kumasi Metropolis, Offinso, and surrounding suburbs like Ohwim and Amanfrom.
While the shutdown promises long-term relief, residents face immediate challenges.
Hospitals, schools, and households are urged to stockpile water or explore alternative sources during the outage.
GWCL has assured that crews will work around the clock to meet the 72-hour deadline, though delays could extend disruptions.
The project underscores broader efforts to revamp Ghana’s water infrastructure amid rapid urbanization. With Kumasi’s population projected to grow by 15% by 2030, GWCL’s investments aim to future-proof supply networks.
GWCL apologized for the inconvenience and assured that engineers will work expeditiously to restore supply within the timeframe. The shutdown aligns with efforts to improve service delivery and resolve long-standing supply challenges
