A Nigerian woman at Duase in the Oforikrom Municipality, Kumasi is under investigation after allegedly inflicting burns and other injuries on her nine-year-old sister during an incident that has raised community concern about prolonged abuse.
Police have identified the suspect as Beauty Inakwe, who lives in a compound house with the victim and her own child.
Neighbours say the girl, Ruth Wisdom, was brought from Nigeria to stay with her but has reportedly faced repeated mistreatment over several months.
Residents told journalists that the latest incident occurred on Saturday when Inakwe allegedly confronted the child for defecating in their room.
The suspect is said to have assaulted the girl, prompting tenants to intervene and rush the child to Manhyia Hospital.
Health workers at the facility confirmed finding both recent injuries and signs suggesting earlier episodes of abuse.
Community members also claim the suspect routinely locks the two children inside their room at night while she goes to work, leaving them without access to a toilet.
The room has no sanitation facilities, and the children rely on a nearby public toilet, which they sometimes cannot reach in time.
Police at the Kenyase District Command arrested Inakwe on Saturday, November 22, 2025.
However, She was later granted bail after officers noted that she had sustained injuries, reportedly during a confrontation with some residents before being handed over to authorities.
The victim has been discharged from the hospital but remains in discomfort. She is currently staying with community members who are providing temporary care while investigations continue.
