With just two days to the December 7, 2024, General Elections, traders at the Kumasi Racecourse Market in the Ashanti Region have officially declared their support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate Former President John Dramani Mahama.
Addressing a news conference on Thursday, December 5, 2024, the traders commended the NDC for its efforts during its previous administration, particularly in ensuring the safety and development of markets.
“Under the NDC administration, they constructed many safe trading markets for Asanteman. These markets are spread across the Ashanti Region. After comparing the eight-year rule of the NDC to that of the NPP, we can confidently say that the NDC government served our interests better. Therefore, in this election, our votes will go to the NDC,” a spokesperson declared.
The traders contrasted this with what they described as the challenges faced under the eight-year rule of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“Look, when the NPP took over from the NDC, the Kejetia Market had already been built. The NPP started the Kumasi Central Market project phase two, but after eight years in government, they haven’t completed it. Is this a government we can be proud of?” one trader questioned.
Speaking on behalf of the traders, Madam Akosua Pokua praised the NDC for implementing policies that significantly improved conditions for market traders.
She also endorsed former President John Dramani Mahama as the preferred choice for the presidency, urging fellow traders in the Ashanti Region to vote massively for the NDC.
“Because the NPP has not performed well in government, especially in Ashanti, they are now desperately begging for votes. Dr. Bawumia met with us traders a few days ago. NAPO also met with us this week, and today, Samira Bawumia, the Second Lady, is in Kumasi to meet us again. You can imagine the pressure they are facing in the Ashanti Region,” she stated.
She added, “For us, the traders at the Kumasi Racecourse Market, our votes in this year’s election are for former President John Mahama. We are fed up with the NPP. Gone are the days when we voted for them without critically assessing their performance in government. This election, the situation has changed—John Mahama is our man,” she reiterated.
The endorsement underscores the growing political activity in the region as political parties wrap up their campaigns ahead of the elections.
