Former Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has dismissed claims suggesting that the Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, gifted him a vehicle.
According to him, the claim made by Ernest Owusu Bempah, a member of Kennedy Agyapong’s presidential campaign team is entirely false and lacks basis.
Owusu Bempah had alleged that Mr. Agyapong had gifted a Tundra vehicle to Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Adinkra on Pure FM in Kumasi, the former veteran legislator insisted that he had never received any car gift from Mr. Agyapong and had never even owned a Tundra vehicle.
“In all my life, I’ve never used a Tundra before. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has never gifted me a car.
I once asked him to buy two Ford F-150 pickups for me, but I paid for them myself,” he clarified.
Recounting the circumstances, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu explained that during the 2016 election campaign, Kennedy Agyapong donated pickups to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for campaign operations. He said he admired one of the vehicles but requested something more durable for his own use.
“He told me that what he brought, the price including the cost of shipping and clearing, was $5,000. I then said I needed something stronger than what he had brought something I could use for a long time, even after the campaign activities.
He continued, “I told him I needed two, and he said if I wanted two stronger ones, I would pay $10,000 each.
“Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has never gifted me a car. I asked him to buy a Ford F-150 for me, and I gave him the money to purchase it on my behalf,” he emphasized.
He refuted assertions that a Tundra was delivered to him in Parliament as a gift, explaining that the vehicle Owusu Bempah saw was one of the Fords he had purchased.
Mr. Bonsu declared “The guy (Ernest Owusu Bempah)’s claims are baseless; he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
“He also said he saw the Tundra being delivered to me in Parliament. It is true that a Ford, not a Tundra, was driven to Parliament, and I asked my driver to take it,” he added.
The Suame lawmaker challenged anyone in doubt to cross-check his claim with Kennedy Agyapong himself, stressing that he personally paid for the two vehicles.
“Ken is alive; anyone can ask him. I paid $20,000 for those two vehicles. It was not a gift,” he maintained.
