A loading boy at Ayi Mensah in the Greater Accra Region, Jonathan Quaicoe, has been commended by the police for his honesty after returning a bag containing €3,000 and GH¢1,000 that had been left behind in a commercial vehicle travelling from Accra to Koforidua.
The incident began when a woman boarded a commercial Toyota Hiace at Ghana Flag with the bag containing the money.
Upon arriving in Koforidua, she discovered that the bag was missing and reported the matter to the Koforidua Central Police Station.
Following the report, the New Juaben South Police Command deployed an investigation team to Accra to trace the missing bag and establish how it had been lost.
Police investigations eventually led officers to Quaicoe, who had reportedly found the bag while working in the Ayi Mensah area.
Instead of keeping the money, Quaicoe voluntarily handed the bag and its contents over to the police, enabling the rightful owner to recover her property.
The police subsequently praised Quaicoe for his exemplary conduct, describing his honesty as an act worthy of emulation.
At a ceremony organised to recognise his integrity, the New Juaben South Municipal Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Augustine Asante Kusi, urged the public to hand over lost valuables to the police rather than keeping them.
According to him, acts of honesty and integrity are essential to building public trust and promoting a safer society.
As part of the recognition, the owner of the money reportedly rewarded Quaicoe for his honesty, while the police also presented him with a brand-new mobile phone.
ASP Asante Kusi further urged Ghanaians who find lost property to resist the temptation to keep it and instead cooperate with the police to ensure that such items are returned to their rightful owners.
He said Quaicoe’s actions demonstrated that honesty remains an important value in society and encouraged others to follow his example.
