The Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has criticized former President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of making false promises about creating a new region for the people of Bawku.

According to Dr. Prempeh, also known as Napo, Mahama’s remarks are misleading and an attempt to deceive the people of the area for political gain.

Addressing a gathering of religious leaders, Zongo Chiefs, identifiable groups, teachers, and students in Ashanti Mampong, Dr. Opoku Prempeh questioned Mahama’s commitment to national development.

He pointed out that Mahama, during his tenure as president, failed to create a region for his own people in the north, making it difficult to believe that he is genuinely interested in the development of other regions.

“In his time as president, Mahama couldn’t even create a region for his own people in the north, yet he claims he will create one for the people of Bawku. Is he truly focused on national development, or is he merely using this as a political tool?” Dr. Prempeh asked.

Dr. Prempeh urged the people of Mampong to vote decisively for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections, emphasizing that Bawumia has consistently demonstrated leadership qualities that can transform Ghana.

He also expressed confidence that the Mampong constituency will re-elect its Member of Parliament, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, to continue the good work he has been doing in Parliament.

He further compared Mahama’s record to that of President Nana Akufo-Addo, noting that under Akufo-Addo’s leadership, two new regions were created in the north, and peace was restored to the Dagbon traditional area—a major milestone that Mahama, despite being from the north, failed to achieve during his presidency.

“The peace in Dagbon is a significant achievement. It shows that the Akufo-Addo-led government has delivered on its promises and brought lasting peace to the region,” Napo added.

The event also saw teachers in the constituency express their appreciation for the NPP government’s Free SHS policy, which has provided significant relief to both parents and educators.

Joseph Acquah, the Acting Chairman of the Ashanti Mampong Coalition of Concerned Teachers, praised the NPP’s Teacher Professionalization policy, which introduced Teacher Licensure, Professional Learning Communities, and Continuous Professional Development, making the teaching profession more rewarding.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to his father, the Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, for his prayers, blessings, and unwavering support. He credited the Mamponghene’s wisdom and counsel as invaluable to his political journey.

In a related address, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, MP for Ashanti Mampong, condemned the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) for allegedly campaigning along religious lines.

He emphasized that Christians and Muslims have lived harmoniously in Ghana for generations and that religious differences should not be used to divide the country.

“We have lived together as Christians and Muslims peacefully for a long time. There is no reason to think that a Muslim cannot lead this country,” Ampratwum-Sarpong said.

The NPP’s campaign in Mampong continues to gather momentum, with the leadership optimistic about victory in both the presidential and parliamentary elections.
